The erect branches have numerous spines on the stem. The creeping branches found post-maturation are smooth on the edges and form secondary branches with secondary holdfasts on the terminal portions. Leaves are lanceolate to oblong with serrations, and vesicles are spherical. The plants are 1-2 m high, and form large communities on rocks in lower intertidal zones in relatively calm waters.
