The plants have compressed main branches and lanceolate to elliptical leaves with numerous serrations on the margins. The holdfast is discoidal, and the vesicles are obovate to elliptic without any projections. This species is yellowish brown when it is alive and grows to 1.5 m high on rocks in subtidal zones along shorelines with moderate water movement.
