Rhizoidal filaments are not found on this species. The plant is similar to Ch. ligustica however its cells are shorter (40-60 µm in length) and thicker (25-40 µm in diameter) and have fewer nuclei (1-4 nuclei) in each cell. The cell walls are also thicker (<4 µm). The plants drift on the bottom or entangle with other substrates in very calm areas such as brackish water aquaculture ponds or canals.
