The plants have a discoidal holdfast that is 1-2 mm in diameter. The branches are compressed at middle to upper portions. Branchlets present distichously along the main branches. The seaweed is purple to dark red in color, and cartilaginous. This seaweed grows on rocks or dead coral in subtidal zones along shorelines exposed to moderate to strong wave activity.
