The plants have flattened, soft, cartilaginous branches which are supported by a short cylindrical stipe. The branches are pinnate or alternate four to five times. The terminal branchlets are slender and linear with acuminate tips. Numerous spine-like projections are found on the surface of the main branches. This seaweed is orange to red in color, and forms bushy large clumps on rocks in subtidal zones along moderately wave exposed shorelines.
