The plants are light green, transparent, spherical, and grow up to 1 mm in diameter. It grows on crustose coralline algae in subtidal zones along moderately wave exposed shorelines. It is considered to be the "Halicystis phase" of the plant "Derbesia" (Derbesiaceae, Bryopsidales) as well as other Halicystis species.
