This species is externally similar to D. cavernosa, except this plant forms a solid hemisphere, the surface of which is made up of small hexagonal or polygonal cells. It is slightly difficult to distinguish between it and D. cavernosa as a pressed and dried specimen. This seaweed grows on rocks or coral fragments in subtidal zones along wave exposed shorelines.
