This cartilaginous species is erect, grows to about 10-15 cm tall and is reddish to purple in color. The holdfast is small and discoid. The branches are cylindrical, and branchlets are arranged alternately. The apices of ultimate branchlets are truncated. This plant is found on rocks in subtidal zones along strongly wave exposed shorelines.
