This species is hard, tough and wiry, and somewhat decumbent, forming sparse tufts. The branches are flat, linear, dichotomously or trichotomously divided, with acute apical portions. The plants are dark red to russet in color, and found on rocks or in cracks in subtidal zones along shorelines exposed to moderate to strong water movement.
