Acanthophora species is not popular in commercial culture, nor is there any human consumption of this fresh seaweed. However its usefulness lies in water treatment and aquatic animal food such as abalone. An abalone farm in Phuket province feeds Acanthophora to abalone broodstocks. Abalone farm workers also keep the tank clean by exchanging the seaweed daily to remove defecation from the water.
