Species of Genus Chara or "SARAI FAI" (fire seaweed) has different local names such as "SARAI RONT" (hot seaweed) or "SARAI MEN" (bad smelling seaweed) due to its unique smell. This plant occasionally grows in low salinity (about 3-5 ppt) aquaculture ponds. Shrimp farmers in Southern parts of Thailand such as Songkhla province usually eradicate this seaweed from their ponds because they believe that shrimp eat it, which causes their body to turn a strange green color. These shrimp attract a lower market price.
