Effects of timing of N fertilizer application on grain production and N use efficiency in pigeonpea/sorghum intercropping (Timing of N fertilizer application in intercropping systems of the semi-arid tropics)

Description

[Synopsis]

Nitrogen fertilizer application at about a month after sowing brought about a higher grain yield, area-time equivalent ratio and nitrogen use efficiency compared with the application before sowing. It is speculated that inorganic nitrogen which accumulated in the soil solution during dry the season contributed significantly to the initial growth of fast-growing component crops (sorghum) in the intercropping system.
