BNI technology was featured in the “Green Food System Strategy” to achieve both productivity and sustainability of food, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industries through innovation.

On 12 May 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries formulated the “Green Food System Strategy” to achieve both productivity and sustainability of food, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industries through innovation.

Green Food System Strategy

The Green Food System Strategy sees requirements to respond to global environmental issues and the SDGs. The four boundaries, climate change, loss of biosphere integrity, land system change, and nitrogen and phosphorus flows to the biosphere and oceans in the nine planetary boundaries concept, introduced from Stockholm Resilience Centre, have already crossed the boundaries resulting in increases in the risk of large-scale abrupt or irreversible environmental changes.

“Development of BNI-enabled varieties to reduce GHG and water pollutants” which JIRCAS has been working as a lead institute, was listed in “Development of planet-friendly super varieties” as specific activities recommended by the strategy.

The strategy aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 by focusing on achieving the SDGs and realizing a green society through decarbonization of food, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industries and reducing the environmental impact of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. JIRCAS will continue to promote the development of planet-friendly and highly efficient BNI-based food production systems.
