"Hoshimi-ishi"(Star Observation Stone)

In the Yaeyama Islands, "star observations" were carried out to know the time of sowing in agricultural work, and "precise observation of Pleiades' movement and the time of sowing was a great responsibility of the elders of each island village" (Yaeyama Ethnography, by Eijun Kishaba). It seems that "star observation stones" were used to measure the position of these stars. The photo shows the stone at Tonoshiro area.
