"Tsummase" (Ohama)

Large trees are often planted at the entrances (Y-shaped junction) of villages, and are called "Tsummase". The trees are believed to ward off evil spirits and also serve as landmarks, as the shade of the trees provides a place for residents to enjoy meeting and chit-chatting with each other. The photo is a "Tsummase" in Ohama area (used to be a Y-shaped junction). If you look for it, you will find large trees that are thought to be "Tsummase" all over Ishigaki Island. For more information, please ask the locals.
