Vetiver grass for soil erosion control

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) is a perennial herb of the grass family native to India.
Vetiver is planted as a greenbelt, and has been recognized as one of the best management practices to control erosion in recent years.
It has the following characteristics

  • Ears are produced and seeds are formed, but the seed does not have the ability to germinate, so there is no risk of it becoming a weed.
  • The above-ground portion can be used as a bedding weed.
  • It regenerates even if tractors run over it.
  • It is easy to cultivate as it is resistant against pests and diseases.
