A paper published in The Lancet Planetary Health (Articulating the effect of food systems innovation on the Sustainable Development Goals) in December 2020 discussed the trade-off between food system innovation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Emerging trade-offs must be addressed, particularly those involving social aspects like inequality and social justice, in order to achieve true sustainability.

In order to avoid trade-offs, it is necessary to design technology development and intervention in consideration of the socio-political economy and environment in the field. JIRCAS also collects and provides information on the trends of sustainable development in developing countries.
