On August 11, 2020, temperatures in excess of 40 degrees were recorded in several places in Japan. The Carbon Brief, a UK-basedwebsite covering the latest developments on on climate change, announced on July 30 that 2020 could be the first or second warmestyear in history. Global surface temperatures were exceptionally high in the first half of 2020, comparable to 2016. Unlike 2016, when there was a particularly strong El Niño event in the tropical Pacific region, this year has markedly high temperature, given that the El Niño event has been “neutral” so far.
