On April 24, 2020, Nature Communications published a comment article by Runting et al. on the role of big data in environmental protection and promoting sustainable development. Here are some excerpts from the article.

Big data reveals the harsh environment facing the environment, while at the same time revealing “bright spots” in terms of opportunities in conservation and sustainability. Big data analysis is effective for environmental conservation in cooperation with efforts to promote sustainable development.

The Big Data Revolution, achieved by integrating technologies that enable large amounts of data acquisition, processing, analysis, and visualization in a short period of time, has led to the explosion of various types of data over the past 50 years. Advances in data accumulation in bio-geophysical sciences have made it possible for scientists to discover, analyze and understand environmental changes from the micro level to the global level, and separate human driven factors. For this reason, grasping the current state of the environment and trend analysis have also attracted attention in the application of big data.

The article concluded that big data acquisition and analysis must be linked to environmental decision-making to meet the challenges of sustainable development. Big data analysis enables detailed evidence collection of rapid environmental changes, from recording the greening process of the earth to detecting illegal resource exploitation. And to ensure that there is enough time and space to save theenvironment, there must be a tight coupling of big Data analyses and the sustainability agenda.
