The Global Risk Report 2020 published by the World Economic Forum indicate that the top five global risks in terms of likelihood are all environmental including extreme weather events (floods, storms etc.), failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation, human-made environmental damage and disasters (oil spills, radioactive contamination etc.), major natural disasters (earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption, geomagnetic storms etc.), and major biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse. The report also emphasized the need for integrated solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges, policymakers to balance economic growth with the protection of the earth, and the private sector to refer to scientific knowledge to avoid catastrophic losses in the future.
