The UN Environment Program (UNEP) Emissions Gap Report for 2019 warns that the global greenhouse gas emissions must fall by 7.6 per cent each year between 2020 and 2030 so that the world will remain on track towards the 1.5°C temperature target under the Paris Agreement and control the impact of climate change.

The report mentioned that global greenhouse gas emissions have continued to increase at an annual rate of 1.5% over the past 10 years. In 2018, it was estimated that emissions including from land use changes such as deforestation have reached 55.3 gigatons, the highest ever in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent. This indicated that the global average temperature may rise by 3.2 degrees every year even with measures to reduce emissions under the Paris Agreement.
